Live Life in Full Bloom with Spellbinders

 Hi friends!

Today I am working with Spellbinders January release of Love-in-a-Mist by Susan Tierney-Cockburn. It is part of the Poet's Garden Collection. I just adorn Susan's flowers so much. I am a gardener and I think it's so fun to create the flowers in my studio. Sometimes I try to make the flowers correctly formed and colors like they do in nature but other times I just go with what I feel like.

 For the flowers, I actually use scrap pieces of white cardstock. I find that is a great way to use those scraps! I used watercolors to color them. No, I am not using watercolor paper. I like all the warping that happens for the colors. I do not excessively rub or water them as to cause any type of pilling.

 I let them air dry or if I am in a hurry I put them on a paper towel and use a heat gun to speed that up. 

Once dry, I put them on a foam pad and a shaping tool to add the shape. Just run the ball of the tool from end of petal or leaf towards the center. For a pointed end I just pinch it a little.

 The background is an embossing folder also by Susan but a former release. It is one that I reach for often. I dragged yellow ink on one side of the embossing folder. I wanted the ink to be in the grooves of the honey comb so I choose the side of the folder for that. 

I assembled and glued the flowers together and adhered them to the card panel. 

The sentiment is also from Susan in a former release.

Christmas Poinsettia Card

Today I show you how to make this Christmas card.

I call this a mini slimline sized card. Mini slimline cards should be 3.5 x 6 inches. I don't make them that size because I have a giant pile of papers that are 6x6 in and also 12x12 inch papers that can be cut to make 4. That makes my mini slimlines a little bit smaller than the norm. I think that's perfectly fine and makes more sense. 

I use this set by Crafter's Companion to make the poinsettia and also the sentiment.This set is discontinued but there are listings for it on eBay and I have linked one of them below.

I start with the background panels so that I give them time to dry before assembly. I used a holiday floral embossing folder (link below) to add interest and texture. 

I use these two sprays to color two separate panels. The green for the embossed one and the yellow for a plain one. 

Some people have a dedicated splatter box to do the spraying in so paint doesn't go everywhere. I just use my garbage can. I don't toss food or other gross things in there so it works fine. Either before spraying or after they have dried these need to be cut down. The yellow goes in the back and if you see I have some splotches from painting. No big deal. The perimeter is what will show the most and even if a splotch shows, it is really okay. 

Yellow piece gets cut down to: 2.75x5.5"

Green piece gets cut down to: 2.5x5.25"

I stamp the poinsettia flower two times on white cardstock. If the impression is not perfect, it is probably okay. 

I use watercolors to paint one red with a yellow center and the other green. They do not need to be perfect. I don't want the paint to be perfectly even. I didn't paint the green one in its entirety. This flower is to be cut down and used as leaves so I picked some that I felt made sense for that.

Glue the yellow and green panels to the card base.

I glue the green leaves to the back of the red flower and mostly on one side. As you can see in the above photo I place it so it is hanging off the edge of the card and I don't want to waste the ones I painted.

I used foam adhesive tape to attach the flower to the card. Flip the card over and use scissors to trim off the parts that are hanging over the edge.

 

I used a circle die to cut out a circle that fits the sentiment and I glue that to the card. I position the sentiment and the flower in a way to let the embossed panel show some too. I then used a black spatter paint to finish the card.

Sympathy Card using Gina K Designs set

 Hi friends!

Today I present to you this sympathy card I made using Gina K Designs set call Delicate Flowers. 

The set has stamps, dies, and stencils available. 

I have the vision in my head to make this a single flower with leaves on a stem so I take a card panel that I had already put some gold splatter on. I stamped the flower and the leaves. 

I tried my best to place the leaves so they can be attached to the stem. 

I use the stencils to add color to the flowers and the leaves. I used one color for the flower and one color for the leaves.

 

 The amount of pressure used during application can allow you to get darker and lighter versions of the same exact ink. 

I drew the stem with a marker in a slightly darker green than the leaves. 

I picked a cardstock in a color that I liked to frame the image and attached both to a card base.

I added some gems and we are done! I know some people might feel that my color choices are too bright or cheerful for a sympathy card but I don't think in terms of that. It is cheerful, simple, beautiful and it is hopeful to bring a second of joy to someone who needs it.
